Our class explored non-fiction articles this week for reading. We also wrote paragraphs about our mask project, set up email accounts, discussed service learning, watched and wrote about CNN student news, became acquainted with our social studies books, learned about landforms, played collaborative games in PE and read the first chapter for our book unit! And we learned to juggle. We've been busy!
Thank you for all volunteer forms. I will be in touch soon.

We are doing our first fundraiser this week which is how we will be earning money for our field trip. Please help your student fill out the booklet of postcards as we earn money simply for returning full booklets. The adressees will then receive magazine orders and online shopping opportunities that can help us earn more funds.

I really look forward to speaking with you at Back to School Night this Thursday.

New

This week we will be learning more about what's expected in the classroom. We will especially focus on how to respond in writing to articles we read at home.

We will begin earth science and world history.

Flag football begins this week. Permission slips were sent home with students who expressed interest.

Updates and Info

The first three days were great! Now onto a full week! We played autograph bingo, classroom treasure hunt and organized our binders. We ran the mile and took an assessment in math and reading. We also learned about masks in various cultures around the world and made our own metal masks which will be displayed by the end of the week. We began math.

A few of you have expressed interest in volunteering in the classroom or for special activities.  I can always use extra assistance in and outside of the classroom. With our small staff, every extra ounce of effort helps! Please check the attached sheet sent home with your student to indicate what you would be willing to do.

Thank you!

Welcome to 2015/2016!

Dear Camptonville Middle School Families,

I hope you have enjoyed your summer and had plenty of time to sleep in and play in the sun!
This next school year, starting August 19th, I have high expectations for student achievement, and I wanted to make sure students come prepared with everything they need to think deep, learn a lot and stay organized. We will be using and providing student planners this year, so there is no need to purchase agendas or calendars. Please make sure your student has:

Necessary
____A backpack or book bag
____Plenty of sharpened pencils or mechanical pencils with extra lead
____One sturdy binder for back and forth from school to home, 1.5"-2" based on your preference
____Binder paper (college ruled or wide ruled is your choice) – This year, we will not be providing lined paper, students need to bring it daily.
____One pack of binder dividers – six is preferable but five is fine.
____One designated homework folder, three whole punched, that can be kept in binder.
____A writing journal – as long as the paper is lined, I don’t care about the style. Students are welcome to decorate it beforehand.
____Three composition books: one each for reading, math and science, different colors are preferable.
____A calculator – it doesn't need to be fancy but should have the capability to do square roots.
____Pack of 3" x 5" index cards with one blank side and one lined side
____Red ballpoint pens
____One glue stick

Optional
Colored pencils and/or markers
Small pencil sharpener
Extra erasers
Pencil pouch/Pencil box
Headphones compatible with iPad

Please let me know in advance of the first day of school, if you are unable to acquire these items. I can be reached via email at ms.maggieorion@gmail.com or at Camptonville School – feel free to leave a message.
Parents and caregivers, I look forward to welcoming you at back-to-school night to outline what we'll be exploring this year as well as answer any questions you might have about classroom procedures, academic standards, homework expectations, and how to best support your student.
In addition to sending newsletters home, I will be posting all correspondence on our class blog throughout the year. I will also showcase exemplary student work and class activities. Please check it out at cougarvilleclass.blogspot.com, and consider following posts by signing up on the left hand side of the home screen.
Also, be reminded that incoming 7th graders need proof of TDAP immunization for enrollment, so consider scheduling a doctor's appointment as soon as possible.
Finally, I'll sign off by thanking you in advance for your support. I believe family involvement is integral to student success and I am excited for this next year of teaching and learning.

Thank you,

Maggie Orion
